Behind The Lens

Location

In my basement, still-life set-up area. I used a copy stand.

Time

Oh, around midnight. I sometimes get "inspired" late at night and it's not like there's any consideration about daylight in a basement.

Lighting

I used a small, LED flashlight at a very low angle so that only the thin gears and the raised edging on the tray they were on were being hit by the beam.

Equipment

Nikon D8100 camera, Nikkor 60.. f2.8 Micro Lens, a copy stand to shoot down on the chrome tray (a Dollartree purchase) with the gears on it.

Inspiration

I've used these gears for a couple other images, but I wanted to put them on a surface which was black, but could "frame" them after I arraigned them on it. The cheap chrome tray I used had some fancy edging and with careful aiming of the flashlight, it would be effectively a black background.

Editing

I adjusted the contrast and the gamma of the image in Corel Photopaint and to make the whole composition stand out more, I used the program to make 40% gray lines around it to simulate matting.

In my camera bag

I usually bring half a camera store with me when I'm out in the field. Focal lengths of lenses ranging from 420mm to 14mm wide angle for my Nikon "full-frame" digital cameras, usually My Nikon D810 or D700. Also a couple of small flash units and I always bring my tripod

Feedback

Small items for macro photography can look very unique if you used a variety of backgrounds and lighting.
