Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on an old suspended bridge inside the osun osogbo heritage site. I am a self-taught photographer, so i tend to experiment a lot.

Time

This image was shot in 2016, around 3:00 pm. I wanted to create an image that will capture the viewers attention, drawing them to look at the image. I had to balance the camera with a steady hand since i had no tripod. It was one of the days, i pick my camera to explore cultural sites

Lighting

since i was busy exploring cultural site and osogbo grove is more of a mystique to a lot of tourist. I decide to make the image look a bit mysterious by creating an element of motion, drawing the viewers attention to the image.

Equipment

It was shot on a Nikon D5300, with an 18 -55 mm f/3-5 lens.

Inspiration

As an adventurer and travel photographer, there is always a need to capture images that are not too common all-over the internet, so on getting to the site, i decide to try out something new and outside the norm. I had wanted to shoot the river instead but the view from the bridge was not too clear. The photographic technique achieved in the image is called zoom burst; it creates an impression of motion towards a subject.

Editing

not much except for the contrast / vibrance, which i applied at a minimal

In my camera bag

I always have the Nikon 18-55mm, very handy and good performance although not too good under low light but outside in the sun, it's a perfect lens for travel. Another lens is the Nikon 50mm 1.8prime, normally for portraits, very useful for headshots. I also pack Nikon 55 -300 f/3.5, a very capable telephoto lens, although a little big, but i like it's robustness and performance are extraordinary with a reliable vr that allows me to shoot without a tripod and still capture amazingly sharp shots.

Feedback

In-order to create zoom burst / a motion, you will need a lens with a manual zoom ring (in my case, Nikon 18-55 mm), It is very important you either have a steady hand or make use of a tripod, so as not to cause camera shake. You will need to try out a few shots to understand how the zoom ring works, the trick is to balance the speed of the zoom ring with the shutter speed and choose the right subject.
