Location
I actually took this photo in the basement of the authors home (Wesley Robert Lowe) in Vancouver, BC - This is his daughter Allison and she agreed to pose for images for the covers of his book. It is technically a studio photograph as we used a 12 ft background paper stand & white paper.Time
This was photographed in late afternoon although that does not matter mush as we used a Alien Bee Strobe in the basement of the author's home.Lighting
Alien Bee Strobe was lit on white background paper behind the model. Aperature was adjusted so she went completely black. No reflectors were used.Equipment
Canon 1dx, 100mm 2.0 Canon lens, Two Manfrotto stands and crossbar for the backdrop stand. We used another stand for the Alien Bee Studio Strobe. We added a kiss of light from another Alien Bee Strobe.Inspiration
Since the novel is a thriller and adventure as you read it, we wanted to convey a sense of danger to the image. We did have a couple of guns in the basement and so we tried various poses and then I thought to create a Silhouette of Allison by overexposing behind her and letting most of her hair go black except some highlights sh had in her hair. Very little processing actually. I took it into PS and touched up a few things.. dirt or spots etc..In my camera bag
Canon 1dx, 100mm 2.0, 50mm 1.4, 28-70mm 2.8, 600 RT Flash, Lens hoods, batteries, etcFeedback
Take your time.. You have approx 3 hours to work with any model and then they usually seem to lose energy, Work and talk with your model. Collaboration does wonders for your creativity. Shoot way more than you think you need. It's typically digital and so shoot a lot. Don't cheap out on equipment - especially lenses.
