Location
This photo was shot at Inle Lake. The Intha fishermen there has this unique leg-rowing technique. A pole is attached to one leg which he uses to row and the other leg to balance of his boat. This leaves his hands free to handle the conical basket which he uses to catch the fishes.Time
This was almost sunset when we were there. The sun was still high behind the clouds.Lighting
While the sun was still up high prior to sunset, the weather was also not what we expected. Normally, a great sunset scene would appear behind him by the mountains, but that day, it was wet. So instead, I focused on the fisherman up close.Equipment
Nikon D5300, handheld, no flashInspiration
The story of the Intha Fishermen by itself is quite unique. Instead of just capturing the usual profile or portrait, it was interesting to capture shots that depict parts of their unique qualities and actions. On a previous shot, I focused on the feet, one holding on to the pole/oar while the other balancing on the boat as I capture how they balance and maneuver the oar with just one foot. On this shot, I wanted to capture how they maneuver their heavy catching baskets using their hands and one foot while he balances himself and the heavy basket on the tiny boat.Editing
Yes, my usual workflow includes some adjustments on shadows, highlights, clarity and vibrance. For this shot, I also converted it to black and white so as to lead the eyes of the audience to the giant basket and the textures with the fisherman in the background. In my camera bag
I usually bring my DSLR and a travel lens when I go on trips but when I have more time to do some specific photography, I also bring a wide lens and a tripod. I also bring a micro 4/3s and my mobile phone as backup and switch between these depending on the situation.Feedback
When the environment is not perfect, like in my case, too early for sunset and not-so-perfect weather, try shots that help the audience focus on different aspects of the subject. Try a different angle, zoom in for more details, be unconventional, be creative!
