Location
This was taken in April 14, 2014 in the Monument Valley (Arizona, USA) when the full moon was just rising and a few hours before a total lunar eclipse started.Time
A couple of friends and I just came back from a tour and since we didn't want to miss the moonrise, we skipped supper to look for what we thought would make a good spot to set up our cameras. When the moon finally rose at just after 7 PM, we were stunned at how huge it appeared. This photo was one of a series I took.Lighting
The seemingly enormous moon practically lit the entire valley.Equipment
I shot this with a Tamron 150mm-600mm on a Canon 6D mount. A tripod was also necessary for me to use.Inspiration
It was during my spring break when I met up with friends in the Monument Valley which had already inspired me when I saw it for the first time several years back. My friends and I were already pumped to see the lunar eclipse and we all agreed to take photos of the moon as it rose against the backdrop of the geological wonders in the valley. This particular butte seemed to high-five the moon.Editing
I almost always post-process my landscape photos to bring out my subject, in this case, the moon. I used layers in Photoshop to bring out the right amount of light coming from the moon and to bring out the texture of the landscape in contrast to the darkening sky.In my camera bag
When I get ready to go out to take pictures I make sure to bring my wide angle zoom lens (16mm-35mm) and a telephoto 24mm-70mm zoom lens along with ND grad/solid filters. I bring my 70mm-200 telephoto zoom lens (150mm-600mm) on occasion. I struggle with weight of the gear as sometimes I have to hike a bit so I try to travel light when I can.Feedback
When shooting the moon, use a long lens and shoot around moonrise/moonset when the moon appears largest and the landscape is still naturally lit somewhat. It'd be nice to also include something in the frame such as the butte in the photo to add scale and perspective.
