Location
This was shot in Abraham Lake, Nordegg, Alberta, and just outside the Banff National Park.Time
This was taken in the afternoon while waiting for the sun to set. Earlier that day when the winds picked up, I lost my hat and was about to lose my tripod. Luckily, someone retrieved my tripod which I definitely needed to take this shot.Lighting
Nature provided the best lighting possible that afternoon. The clouds were perfectly situated with respect to the source of light.Equipment
I shot this with my 16mm-35mm f/2.8 mounted on a Canon 6D. I also used graduated neutral density filters. I wanted a long exposure to reflect cloud movement so I set my camera up on a tripod.Inspiration
I had long wanted to see the ice bubbles and was excited to finally see them during my second attempt. It was such a surreal experience to see the frozen methane bubbles in person. It was like stepping into another world.Editing
Yes, I took the image to Photoshop and applied luminosity masks to tone down bright highlights in the image. In my camera bag
Aside from my 16mm-35mm lens, I bring my 24mm-105mm lens, ND filters, polarizer, lens cloths, shutter release, extra batteries and memory cards.Feedback
Always check the weather before heading out. The first time I went, the lake was covered in snow! Scope out the location and give yourself a lot of time to plan your composition. Since you are going to spend a lot of time on the ice, use foot/hand warmers!
