Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at local body of water, one that I usually go to for sunset or nature photos. It's one of my favorite places to walk to and shoot for a few hours until it gets dark.

Time

This was taken the evening, during that point in the summer that I noticed the days were starting to get stay brighter longer and that's my cue to start going out to the spot more for the light that was now available.

Lighting

The lighting was key because I was trying to have more to work with than previously available, the light had to change more gradually and this day's batch of photos showed the same scene and how different it looked with every stage until blue hour. The lighting was that key this photo's mood.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon Rebel t4i and an 18-135 mm kit lens.

Inspiration

I wasn't always a fan of summer as a whole but I always go to beaches and lakes or bodies of water to appreciate how to the sunset turned them into canvases for the colors in the sky. Seeing this is the embodiment of nature being art itself.

Editing

Yes, I used photoshop and started by making a layer for the clouds and duplicating it to intensify them in their original colors, then proceeding to prepare the water portion and the land of the photo with adjustments to the light, shadows and contrast to start. With the sections ready, I added a custom color layer that was followed by a custom gradient layer that was mirrored and slightly reduced in opacity to allow the previous color adjustments to shine through. After making sure everything looks cohesive and it really felt complete, i knew it was done.

In my camera bag

I usually have more than one lens depending on where I'm going, a flash, pack of SD and CF cards, extra charged batteries and if I'm alone, a tripod.

Feedback

Persistence and a sense of adventure was key to me getting this photo. If others want to try, the best thing I can say is to think of the scene you can always look at and not get bored of seeing. It can be anywhere and no two individuals will pick the same one, it's the beauty of finding the place or scene that feels right to the point where you think about it when you're not there and you wouldn't want to be anywhere else when you are. It's more connected to your feelings than your surroundings.
