This battery was constructed at Fort Stevens in 1904, situated on the Pacific coast near Cannon Beach, Oregon. It was considered a practice battery until WWII began in 1942. Of significance is that a Japanese sub fired on it from the Pacific Ocean in 1942, probably thinking it was a Navy sub base. The soldiers at Fort Stevens were instructed to hold their fire for the moment so as not to give away their position. Eventually, the Japanese lost interest and sailed away. Today it's a tourist attraction and a great place for photographs!

I like both you have uploaded. I am in wonderment by how deep the structure extends in a quasi-infinite direction.

Excellent photo, it has a subtle, haunting glow about it. It almost looks like it was taken with Infra-red film, nice touch. I agree with the POV, I want to explore what is behind the dark door at the end of this stone hall. Thanks for the backstory, I wish more people would do so, it really adds to the photograph. Stories like this inspire me to travel more often and learn about the history that surround us. I think I just found my next road trip, Fort Stevens here i come.
