We were travelling towards the Serengeti, Tanzania, when we stopped for a short break in one of the small communities that straddled the road. We were about to board our land-rovers again when I spied this young child sitting and waiting.
Waiting for Mum maybe? We never got to know as we had to leave but the striking image with the contrasting colours was something I just had to capture.

Location
This phot was taken on the road towards the Serengeti in Tanzania. We had just passed Arusha and needed to stop for a moment. and there he was, sitting quietly across the road.Time
It would have been mid-morning by then.Lighting
Nothing special to say about the lighting - it was a spur of the moment shot using the available natural light. The way the surrounding walls reflected the sunlight helped give the image its richness.Equipment
I had my trusty Nikon D80 with the 18-200 VR lens, my general work horse at the time. No flash needed as the light was perfect nor tripod.Inspiration
The child sitting there alone against the red backdrop which was accented by the horizontal dark blue further down along with the textured wall was just crying out to be captured. I was lucky to have been there and to have seen it.Editing
My post-processing on this image involved the usual clean up of noise and minor blemishes and bringing out the textures in the wall. I also cropped the image down to remove a distracting window. In my camera bag
Apart from my Nikon I always carry an extra lens, often it would be a fixed focal length lens to complement the zoom lens attached to the body. A flash is always in the bag though I rarely use it while I keep an extra radial polariser.Feedback
Keep your eye open for the unexpected and be quick to capture it. Its a moment in time that may be gone the next second and you don't have time to waste playing with settings etc. Just grab the shot.
