Location
This particular shot is of one the '12 Apostles' (although there are only 8 left standing now) , one of Australias best know natural attractions along one of our most iconic driving trips - The Great Ocean Road in Victoria.Time
It was taken on a rather clear afternoon. It was a fairly calm day with a little wind as there usually is on the coast. I thought this would mean a very flat uninteresting image but somehow the classic coastal colours shone through and the pattern on the shore from the rythmic waves gives the eye a line to follow.Lighting
It was taken at a time during the afternoon where the sun was still quite high in the sky, so luckilly there were no light flares dancing about as this can be an issue with the harsh Australian light. I am pleased with how the image turned out, however I would love to do the drive again and stay the night nearby to capture sunrise or twilight to photograph the shadows and different colours playing off of the sandstone.Equipment
No fancy equipment here! Being on a short timeline for this driving holiday , we couldnt spend time pulling over constantly for photos let alone setting up tripods and waiting for the right time for perfect shots. This was very much a point and shoot photo that turned out niceley and there is something to be said for these quick snaps as any camera is better than no camera when capturing memories.Inspiration
This drive and having a photo of the '12 Apostles' is almost a right of passage here in Australia so I couldnt come away without one!Editing
Post processing was a quick edit on the very basic iphone photos editing options all those 5? years ago for the purposes of sharing on facebook. In my camera bag
I normally carry my Cannon EOS 6D Mark II (with Canon zoom lense EF 16-35mm F/2.8 USM II and Tamron 24-70mm F/2.8) and back up Sony Cyber shot ,I like it for those times where its more convenient to handle over the size of the Cannon as although it is point and shoot it still has options to go semi manual and shoot in RAW so it still alows for creativity and play. I usually do most of my photography whilst travelling on holidays and short weekend trips so you will always find 2 large memory cards, 2 batteries and a wall charger per camera as well as UV protectors on both lenses. I also have a Manfrotto compact tripod but havent taken it on a trip with me yet and am already looking at an upgrade.Feedback
In general I always start with the obvious angle but don't waste any time there as I usually scope the other possible angles in the frame. Then I step back (at popular spots...AWAY from the other toursists) and try to find a unique angle including hands up high and taking a knee as I find these are the easiest ways to change the feel of an image. Also, especially when your holiday has a busy schedule always have a camera in your hand and always keep looking behind you as it may be a better shot leaving! With this image in particular as always patience and waiting for the right timing pays off, here I was waiting for the waves to pull away in a certain rythym to create the even pattern on the shore .
