Behind The Lens

Location

Photo was taken of the Sand Pumping Jetty on the spit at Southport just north of Surfers Paradise Queensland, Australia.

Time

This was my first Foray into sunrise. The original photo was taken in May 2016 so was a little cool but not cold. The sunrise was around 5am, which meant leaving home around 4am for the trip to the Gold Coast.

Lighting

The morning was slightly overcast which is quite common on the East coast, as there is quite often showers offshore which creates golden hues with the Sunrise and at times the beams from the sun. Sun was fairly high and blocked by the clouds which left the light from the sun reaching upwards into the broken cloud cover.

Equipment

The photo was shot with an Olympus omd em-5 Aperture: f/6, Shutter Speed: 1/320, Focal Length: 40/1, Lens is a kit lens, Olympus M.zuiko 40 - 150mm f/1.8 no flash. Using a Tripod with cable release and no Flash, using live view.

Inspiration

This was my first foray into photographing the Sunrise. The Sand pumping jetty has been photographed by everyone who owns a camera in Queensland not to mention the tourists. After years of fishing off the coast and travelling into a Sunrise I wanted to Share what I saw on a regular basis. Two things I like to watch is the sea and all its fury and the rising and setting sun.

Editing

Since owning the camera i have learnt that I can set my camera to my liking which requires very little post processing. However this occasion the photo itself was flat although I still liked it. I came across a software kit for Lightroom called Nik. This was the first time I used it and passed it through colour effex pro extreme details which smoothed out the clouds and highlighted the Golden Glow.

In my camera bag

If going Local I will take my small bag and have on the camera first my kit 40-150 mm its fool proof and great for shots of birds and the odd insect and flowers. My 60 mm prime Macro lens, still coming to grips with. and either the prime 45 mm or 14 - 42 mm lens. Recently added a 75-300 mm lens. When away for the day I take all lenses, tripod, Nd 8 filter, wireless remote control and interval timer. Flash is always fitted to the camera but rarely used.

Feedback

Be prepared for anything, All types of Weather, I recently did a sunrise shot locally and was amazed at the amount of photos I had taken. Along with the weather Its amazing how different a Sunrise can change minute by minute. Don't be afraid to move to get different angles, not doing so could mean the difference between a good shot and a great shot. I believe the more you get out of the experience, the more you will improve and capture better photos.
