Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken in downtown Vancouver. This is a hotel/office tower that has a nice finish and very often there are reflections visible on it of the other buildings. As Vancouver grows and more towers are built, the opportunities for shooting reflections increases. I have taken quite a few images of this type.

Time

I cannot recall the exact time of day as this is shot on film and so there is no record available.

Lighting

I shoot a lot on my daily walks around the city as I go about my errands. The sun moves across the southern sky from east to west and varies as the year progresses. This one is shot in November and so the sun is quite low in the sky. At this time of year we often get very strong shadows as the sun being low shines directly along the north south streets. I also am able to catch classic "slices of light" as it shines through alley ways. I wait for interesting people to step into the light.

Equipment

This is shot with a Leica CL and 40mm Summicron lens. I used Kodak 400TX black and white film. It was my second roll of film that I shot with this camera. I develop the film myself in my bathroom and then scan the negatives with a Canonscan 9000F (that I bought at Staples for $5 as it was on clearance being an older model). It was a handheld shot.

Inspiration

Living in a city with all of the towers, seeing this type of reflection is always possible. In this case it was the distortion which caught my eye which is caused by the glass being square around a curved building. It is this quality that makes this building and reflections in it unique.

Editing

I took the scanned TIF image into Lightroom and then used NIK Silverefex to adjust the contrast. Looking at the versions I created I increased the contrast and darkened the blacks a bit.

In my camera bag

I traded that Leica CL for a Leica M6 and bought a 35mm Zeiss Biogen lens for it. The camera is loaded with Kodak 400TX. I also shoot digital and have a Canon 5DMark IV with a range of lens (Canon 50mm 1.4, 85mm 1.8, 16-35mm, 24-105mm, 70-200 F4 and a Sigma 150-500mm for some of my work).

Feedback

Capturing reflections is easy if you live in any modern city. Look for the angles as the what you see reflected will change depending on where you stand. Ensure you have a smaller aperture to get both the foreground building and what is reflected in focus. I find that around the golden hour there are often some varied colours that can be captured. There are many colours of glass on these towers so colour and black and white can both give interesting results.
