Location
While on a holiday in Canada, we stayed at the quirky Num-Ti-Jah Lodge by Bow Lake along the Icefields Parkway in the Canadian Rockies, for the express purpose of taking sunset/sunrise photos at Bow Lake. This was my favourite photo taken during the holiday.Time
The sunset was a fizzer as it was cloudy, so I woke up early the next morning hoping for a decent sunrise. I walked down to a place where people often take photos (near the footbridge) and saw someone had already set up their tripod, so I decided to walk along the lake towards the glacier while I watched the sun rising and the light changing. The photo was taken at about 6.50am.Lighting
There was no sunrise colour in the sky and it started out very dull. However, as the sun rose a bit more, the light became magical, lighting up Mt Crowfoot across the lake and the perfect reflection.Equipment
The photo was taken using a Sony NEX-6 mirrorless camera with a Sony E 10-18mm F4.0 OSS ultra-wide lens. It was hand-held as I rarely used a tripod when this was taken (in 2014).Inspiration
I love taking sunset and sunrise photos. I was walking along the lake looking for an interesting angle when I came across this rock and log sitting in the shallows of the lake and decided this would make a great composition. It was about a metre down from the track to the lake and there was nowhere to stand easily as it was very steep, so I balanced on a couple of rocks, trying to avoid getting wet!Editing
I take photos in RAW, so they do need processing. However, I generally do minimal processing using the basics of shadows, highlights, clarity, vibrance and sharpening.In my camera bag
It depends on where I am going. I have two cameras I now use - a Sony A7r full frame and a Sony A6000 as a backup. If I am hiking, I take the Sony A7r with either a FE35mm f2.8 (for when I want to go lightweight) or an FE16-35mm f4.0. I was recently travelling in Southwest USA and used the FE16-35mm on the Sony A7r and a 50mm f1.8 on the Sony A6000. I have recently bought a Sony 70-200mm f4 as I am travelling to Africa soon. My kit's weight is important to me - I am not interested in carrying a lot of heavy gear, hence the mirrorless system and carrying just the lenses I expect to need. I also carry plenty of spare batteries and memory cards plus a tripod in some circumstances.Feedback
Get up early! It is almost always worth it. And wander around looking for a good location - it is not always the first spot you come across that is best. And if possible, I try and find a spot away from other photographers so that you have that unique shot.
