Ancient Greek Monasteries were built high on top of the mountains, so as to protect themselves from the Turks who were on a mission to wipe out all Greek culture. Burial grounds were at a premium, so when the monks had to bury a recently deceased, they would dig up a previously buried person and place his scull in this chamber... it's true, I saw it, I took this photo!
