Behind The Lens

Location

The picture was taken on a walk in Richmond Park. There are a lot of Deer and a large space for them to roam.

Time

This was a early start. Walking around looking for opportunities. Despite the early start, this shot was taken around late morning when most walkers and joggers had left. It is a busy and popular park around 10 miles form the centre of London.

Lighting

I wanted this image to be mono and close up. Trying to create a feeling of action. It had been raining and was overcast. A perfect lighting scenario for what I was hoping to capture.

Equipment

I used the Canon 1DX mk 2 with the Canon 200-400 lens. I hand held for this shot.

Inspiration

I had been to Richmond Park on many occasions. There is always something to photograph. However I really wanted to capture a close up action shot of rutting deer.

Editing

Not very much. I shoot in Raw and use Lightroom and PS. I did basic adjustments in LR - increased shadows reduced highlights. Moved into PS to convert to mono. A little sharpening and that was it.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon 1DX and a 5d for back up. I usually take the 200-400 telephoto, 70-200 and a wide angle. I sometimes take a tripod depending on the location.

Feedback

Keep trying! I had so many good shots of deer posing but trying to capture something a little more exciting was a challenge for me. The more I practice, the luckier I seen to become.
