Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, San Diego California

Time

Shot during sunset after San Diego experienced Santa Ana winds from the East which gives sunsets a beautiful deep color spectrum.

Lighting

Cloud coverage was actually very light and visibility was greater than 10 miles and temperature was 75F

Equipment

Nikon D7200 AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II 32mm ƒ/13 1/4s ISO 100 Hand Held No flash Used the Shudder Pan technique

Inspiration

My favorite photographer Aaron Chang, who is a local resident in San Diego has two art galleries and mainly offers photographs of the surf, beach and sunsets. He has appeared on over 30 of the last 50 Surfer Magazine cover shots. Aaron has recently been shooting using this Shudder Pan technique which I find very appealing to the eye and has become some of my most popular photos in my collection.

Editing

Yes, but not much was done to this particular photo as the colors just popped using the slower shudder speed and the sun and clouds mixed beautifully to give me this dramatic image. I use Capture One 9 Pro for editing of all RAW files and convert them to JPG.

In my camera bag

Believe it or not, I only carry my Nikon D7200 and three lens to match. All Nikon, 18-55mm, 50mm and 55-300mm. Never carry a tripod as all of my shots are hand held. That's just the method I prefer to shoot. My body is an extension of my photo.

Feedback

Shudder Panning uses a slow shutter speed so you'll have to go manual or use S to control the shudder speed. Go ahead and experiment with several shudder speeds as one speed will not work with all shots. I also prefer using 100-400 ISO, never using more than that. Tripod use is the last thing you'll want to use as hand movement helps assist in the capture of the soft look of the image. This works best taking photos of any body of water, but I like the look of waves in the background as it gives the image a real beautiful flow.
