Behind The Lens

Location

The appalling rate at which these beautiful creatures are being wiped out by poachers, who harvest the horns to sell to the East, where it is stupidly believed to be an aphrodisiac, prevents me from divulging the location of this magnificent specimen.

Time

The image was taken fairly late in the afternoon, at around 16h40.

Lighting

It was a slightly overcast afternoon, and lighting was quite harsh, so I deliberately over exposed the shot for conversion to Mono.

Equipment

Taken with my trusty Canon 5DmkIII, with a Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L USM Lens. Handheld, from my Land Rover.

Inspiration

The plight of our few remaining Rhino's needs to be highlighted at every opportunity. If we continue to create awareness by posting images and informing the world of the senseless eradication of our wildlife, maybe...just maybe, our grandchildren will still be able to see these magnificent beasts in their natural habitat.

Editing

Simple conversion to Black & White in Lightroom...and a slight lifting of the shadows.

In my camera bag

Usually that trusty 5D3, the 28-300mm, a 16-35mm; a 7Dmk2 and a 100-400mm mk2, I also carry a 15mm fish-eye, a cleaning kit, my cap, a rain cover, and sunscreen.

Feedback

Patience is a given. I like to be alone when I'm in the bush- some might think that selfish, but it's quite the opposite...I can't expect anyone else to sit and wait for 5 hours so I can get my shot! If it's a chance encounter in a vehicle, be sure to switch off the ignition, even idling can impact the sharpness of the image. Use a Beanbag if possible. If you're on a guided walk, listen to your ranger at all times, and be aware of tunnel-vision and the dangers it can pose. Eye-level or lower shots work best. Respect the Wild.
