This youngster was 28 or 29 days old on this paticular day. the thing that mattered the most was its weight it had to be a certain wait before it was let out by its self. kiwi chick is ready to fend for its self as soon as it is hatched, but to help them keep their numbers up they are taken as eggs to a safe place to be incubated then returned to a pest free island which is their sanctuary.. A great deal of reforestation has taken place on this island so the birds have a great habitat. this island used to be a place for rehabilitation for people who were struggling with addiction, a beautiful serene place to heal.

It it wonderful when you know you will be going to get a shot of something special, and the prospect of bumping into some other protected species. I can't say don't get too excited because the anticipation is just that. It is also great the extra information you gain when turning up to events like this. There are also many photographers at these events. A long wonderful day. : )
