Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris)

Every day the many squirrels that live around my home is foraging, playing, exploring - and checking me out! Wherever I am they know I'm there, and sometimes they stop for a bit to look at me, as if "don't you know what's on my mind"?

At dusk I can hear them run over my roof! Right before darkness in the evening I often see they pass by my windows on my porch. Squirrels are so much fun and joy for me, and I repay by offering them some nuts and bread crumbs.

But that also attracts predators, and the other day one of "my" squirrels was killed. All that was left was a large amount of fur spread evenly around. The location of this is regularly used by the Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) and Northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), as I've found feathers from many other bird species here. In fact, almost every year one of the local crow fledglings is killed by a hawk. I've witnessed it many times during my 30 years here.
