Fair weather sunset

This autumn has been one ruled by high pressures, and the last one a powerful blocking high that holds even the strongest of lows far at bay. Day in and out the sky has been without clouds. In the summer this would have meant hot days, but now the sun is so low in the sky that instead the longer nights get increasingly colder. Only in the middle of the day is the sun strong enough to make the sun-facing locales warm and pleasant.

This afternoon high clouds were moving in from the east as the day was maturing, and I wondered if at last a I would see a colorful sunset. I set up gear on the beach as the sun was setting, enjoying the very low tide and the scents of the now stranded bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus), and other seaweeds.

Indeed the high clouds delivered wonderful colors as the sun got progressively further below the horizon. And with it the air quickly got colder and colder, and I was in need of gloves! As I walked back to the house I was pondering on the upcoming dark season, and how my current freezing is nothing compared to the upcoming cold months.

I will treasure dearly every sunny day like this, as soon I will need wool, gloves, hat and boots to be comfortable outdoors. Then the only warmth will be in the colorful sunrises and sunsets.
