After Hurricane Ike you will notice that this pier, follow it out to sea, was demolished in places. The lower half of the building was washed away. Some people decided (ignoring mandatory evacuation warnings) that it would be fun to ride out the storm in this building and parked their truck on the jetty. They requested help from the Coast Guard during the height of the storm as the floor washed away from under them and they were told that it was impossible to rescue them at that time. The truck was left on a small part of the jetty and remained there for months since there was a gaping hole in between the truck and land. The people had to be rescued the day after the storm via helicopter.
