Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a park in Calgary, Canada. Mama and her chicks had just been swimming and were busy grooming and drying off

Time

It was early morning. I walked to the park near my hotel to have a nice 30 minute leg stretch before heading to the airport to get on a five and a half hour flight. I was thrilled to watch the little family and was sad that I couldn't stay the whole day. A little toddler out with his parents wanted to get closer to the goslings but Mama chased him off. I explained to them that she might bite him because she was protecting her young.

Lighting

The sun hadn't cleared off the morning clouds yet which made it perfect for taking this shot. I am a believer in natural light and prefer not to use a flash.

Equipment

Canon EOS Rebel E2i, Aperture: 56/10, ISO: 1250, Shutter Speed: 1/1600, Focal Length: 300/1 I didn't have a tripod but used a nearby rock and probably gave everyone a good laugh since I was practically lying across it, behind another rock so the birds wouldn't spook. As you can tell I am really bad at remembering to change my ISO. I had been trying night pics the night before and really should have changed it to 100. I even put a little sticker on the top of my camera to remind me!!! Doesn't always work! Ha! Ha! I was kicking myself later when I realized what I had (or rather hadn't) done. But the photos were fine anyway. I am not a professional. This is a hobby that keeps me out of trouble and makes me happy!

Inspiration

I can't resist baby animals.

Editing

I cropped this little guy and boosted the colour just a little.

In my camera bag

When I am travelling I take my Canon T2i and my EFS18-135 IS zoom lens. I always have a spare battery and charger and extra memory cards. If I am in the car i take all my gear with me. Because of my failing eyesight I now have to rely on auto focus a lot and i like to use a tripod whenever I can.

Feedback

When I am travelling I am at the mercy of the weather but i take pictures no matter what. I don't always have the luxury of choosing the time of day but i prefer early morning and of course the golden hour. To me, photography is magic! I love the wonders of it all, being out in the fresh air trying to capture that special moment. And then I get home and find that sometimes the best shot was the one that wasn't at all planned! Any advice I have to give is just take the photo! If you are an amateur like I am just practice, practice, practice. Try the same shot with different settings. Most of all have fun with it and keep smiling!
