Behind The Lens

Location

Las Vegas, Nevada has an amazing shoot range at the bottom of the mountains in the Northwest are - Clark County Shooting Range. It was a 2-lane drive up Decatur until it dead-ends at the range. I love to drive up there frequently to view the city from the range. There's nothing up there except the 4 various ranges, the winding road, the desert and the mountains.

Time

I arranged this impromptu shoot for a Sunday afternoon, approximately 2:45 pm in October at the top of a mountain edge in the Northwest part of Las Vegas. It was not our usual "dry heat" hot day, it was cool and little winds.

Lighting

I wanted to use the natural sunlight for this mid day shoot. I also had my old Canon Speedlite 420 EX Flash standing by if I were to need to use a fill flash for images shot inside "Pinkie."

Equipment

I hand-held shot my Canon 60D with my Tamron SP 17-50 mm F/2.8 lens with a (pro)master HGX 72mm UV lens filter and used my second Canon 50D camera with a EFS 18-55mm and Canon 75-300mm lenses.

Inspiration

This was my first ever pinup photoshoot with my recently purchased, all-customized hot pink 1951 Chevy Truck, named "Pinkie." My beautiful model, Ann, did all her own hair and makeup. I had purchased several outfits for this shoot as well as future shoots. I truly wanted to show the mountains of Las Vegas with no manmade items in the background. Pinup Girl Photography has been inspiring me since I began my photography education. The color of this truck just struck me as the perfect prop for Pinup Photography. The attention I get just while driving Pinkie even short little rides makes my day. I have yet to put Pinkie in any car shows. In my head I see so many different possibilities of all different kinds of folks in so many fun images who'd look so perfect in it, around it and under the hood.

Editing

A well known photographer came to my college class at College of Southern Nevada and stressed his thoughts of getting a perfect image right out of the camera with no need for any post processing. So that is what I was attempting to do with this shoot. I did end up utilizing just a bit of Photoshop for some minor flaws on the truck as well as needing to put blue in the sky as that day it was just bright and no clouds. Although I did shoot Ann inside "Pinkie" where I did some noise removal and some skin softening techniques along with some fill flash.I have since added Lightroom & Photoshop to my continuous learning and mastering several major techniques.

In my camera bag

I carry both a 50D and a 60D Canon Camera. I love my Tamron SP 17-50 mm F/2.8 lens with (pro)master HGX 72mm UV lens filter; Canon 50mm lens 0.45m 1.5ft; Canon EFS 18-55mm; and Canon 75-300mm lenses, and a Canon Speedlite 420 EX Flash. I carry at least 2 extra SD cards in a protective pouch, as well as always having my LENSPEN for any dust or dirt on my lens and a lens cloth, lots of business cards, water bottles, snacks, tissues and extra outfits for the model. A model release is also a must.

Feedback

Having fun and being comfortable is not just important for the model but you, too, must be enjoying the shoot. My nerves get to me even with family and friends. I usually need to wear a bandana to help me keep the sweat out of my eyes, then I need eye glass cleaner. If I don't know my models I try to spend some time talking with them to become familiar with them. It's important to ask questions prior to the shoot to ask them what they are wanting to do with the images so you can capture their wishes as well as your planned and spontaneous images. Sometimes when I'm just talking to them and they don't know I'm going to shoot is when I get the best images. In my experiences with some other shoots, the person was so self-conscious that letting her see the image as it appeared on the camera was enough to show her she was being captured beautifully and it calmed her down. Yet, some others prefer waiting to see what I've captured. Ann was a close friend, very comfortable in front of the camera young lady with no real model training but she was like a pro.
