Location
This photo was taken in an abandoned mansion just outside of Hudson, NY. I had to drive a few hours and join the local historical association to get entrance into this wonderful old mansion that sits on the grounds of the local prison. Its one of those locations where it looks a lot bigger on the inside. I was kind of disappointed to see so many other photographers there, so I had to practice patience and work around them.Time
We got up early and drove the 2 plus hours up to New York, so this is probably around mid-day. The sun was coming in very hot from the front of the house, which caused some issues keeping the outside view from blowing out, but also gave lovely shadow effects around the house. For example, the railing shadows.Lighting
There was no lights working in the house, so we had to rely on natural lighting from outside. Of course, natural light’s unpredictable nature, especially in the middle of the day, forced me to find ways to work around it. I tried to shoot away from most of the windows, but since I had to shoot the window in this shot, I used a polarizing filter.Equipment
I didn't use a tripod, I'm not really a tripod kind of photographer. Its hard to lie on the floor and shoot up with a tripod. I used a Canon 7D with a Canon 18-55, F/2.8 lens. No flash of course.Inspiration
It seems I am also one who's fallen in love with shooting abandoned locations. Its been trending the last few years. I usually prefer ancient lunatic asylums, but lately I love the absurdity of abandoned mansions. I consider myself an architectural photographer and have always been intrigued by old architecture and buildings, and when they're abandoned, the mystery is even more enticing.Editing
Yes, I used Photoshop and Topaz suite to bring out more of the wall texture - love that peeling paint effect. I also changed from color to B&W for this shot because it tended to bring the shadows out more.In my camera bag
With me it changes from shoot to shoot. Now that I'm older, I don't always like carrying around heavy lenses, so I make sure I have exactly what I need and no more. I generally have my Canon 7D, the Canon 15-55-F/2.8 lens; and my Canon point & shoot camera -Powershot SX60. The SX60's astonishing 65x Optical Zoom (21mm-1365mm) Wide-Angle Lens with Optical Image Stabilizer works amazingly well and weighs nothing in comparison. So I don't take my Canon L 70-200 anywhere anymore unless I really have to.Feedback
Unfortunately there are more and more abandoned lovely houses. You just have to meet the locals and find out where they are, because most photographers won't share that information with you. Just the nature of the beast I guess.
