Location
This shot was taken at the Redwood National and State Park along north coast of California. The ancient coast redwood ecosystem preserved in the parks contains some of the planet's most majestic forests. Here, banana slugs, gray whales, Douglas-fir, black bears, and sea anemones are equally at home with redwoods.Time
There are dozens of walking trail among the coastal redwoods and this was from one of them. It was late afternoon so the sun was behind me coming through the forest.Lighting
It was late afternoon, around 4PM. I liked how the sun touched the tops of the trees, but left the lower part in the shade.Equipment
The shot was taken handheld with a Sony A7R2 and the FE 24-70 2.8 GM lens. I wanted a narrow depth of field so I shot it at f2.8,Inspiration
I wanted to try and convey the height of the trees and how dense they were. Shooting looking up gave a better feel.Editing
I used LR and a B&W preset I had. I took down both the highlights and shadows to show more of the tree's texture. In my camera bag
I have the Sony A7 system and if I'm mainly doing landscapes shot's like this one I always have my 24-70 f2.8 along with a 16-35 f2.8. Then I'll have either an 85mm or 135mm depending on what I'm thinking of shooting.Feedback
Keep looking around and try to see different things. You can always take the typical shot everyone does. The challenge is to find something unique that's personal to you.
