Behind The Lens

Location

During a once in a lifetime cruise the opportunity came to visit the Vatican in Rome. After having visited St Peter's Basilica and the Sistene Chapel, I had to exit via this staircase. So hanging over the balcony and not having time to get my main camera ready, out came my mobile phone as the tour guide hurried us through and I'm very proud of the result.

Time

Five o'clock in the evening on a bright summer's day

Lighting

Not one of my strong points but definitely a work in progress

Equipment

Unusually, this was taken by my Sony mobile phone rather than my Canon DSLR which I had taken the majority of my pictures with this day but very often it is a moment that you know might not present itself again so you have to use what is available.

Inspiration

The angles and the perspective is always on my mind when I'm taking any picture but the flow of the staircase and the movement of the people along it tell the story best.

Editing

Not a sausage, I am very passionate about capturing the moment as it is and often think that over processing or adding effects can take away the essence of the second in time, so this is totally untouched.

In my camera bag

I'm new to this and currently have an entry level dslr, the Canon EOS 1300 but always carry two lenses and two attachments. an 18-55 lens, a 75-300 lens, my wide-angle fisheye attachment and a lens hood to block any unwanted flare on sunny days. Oh an two batteries, you never know when you will have forgotten to charge the one in the camera.

Feedback

My advice would be don't just take the picture but scan the setting as you approach and look for the best angle and perspective to capture the essence of the moment. Sometimes you only have one go at it so the speed setting can come in very handy to take multiple shots then select the one that has the image that inspired you take the shot in the first place.
