I live about a 1/4 mile from Canyon Ferry Lake, Montana and shot this along it's shoresTime
My title and data tells me this was taken on Oct 1st 2016, at 7:07 pm. That time of year is also when the geese migrate thru this part of Montana. Experience has shown that the geese usually come off the lake and go to the fields for the night about sunset so I knew to be on the lookout for them.Lighting
As I recall there had been a lot of late season fires that year and that usually adds color to clouds at sunset.Equipment
This was a handheld shot using a Nikon D3200 with a 55-300 zoom at 300 on auto mode. My metadata shows f5.6 @ 1/160 sec and ISO of 400Inspiration
I go out fairly often in the evening when the cloud cover is looking promising for sunset shots at the lake. As stated before I also knew what the geese would be doing.Editing
Quite often I will turn down highlights, turn up the shadows, add some saturation,adjust alignment, and crop. But on this one I wanted to keep the silhouette of the geese so I probably did not turn up the shadows. I can tell from the metadata that I did crop itIn my camera bag
I have one bag with my Nikon D3200, a 18-55 zoom, 55-300 zoom, Extension tubes for macro, Extra batteries, cleaning equipment, and a remote. I have another bag with a Canon 70 D with 12-18 zoom, 55-250 zoom, 50 mm, and 40 mm macro lens, extra batteries, remote, extension tubes, and cleaning equipment. Also have a Nikon Coolpix S9900 with spare batteries I keep in a belt pouch. I have a fishing vest that I will load up with appropriate gear for hiking. Keep 2 to 3 tripods in my truck along with a shooting/hiking stick. Also have and use some of my old Minolta gear such as 100-300 zoom with 2x converter, and auto bellows. With these I use Nikon and Canon adapters and usually operate in manual mode. Have a EWA underwater housing, rain cape, numerous filters including Cokin, and several small tripodsFeedback
I use The Photographers Ephemeris program to check times and direction of the sun and moon rise/set. Know the area you want to shoot in. Having good maps is always a plus
