Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in one of the fish port in Doha Qatar during a World Wide Fujifilm Photo Walk way back 2016. It was my first time to participate in this kind of activity and I have no deep knowledge in Photography but it was so fun.

Time

This was taken within the Golden Hour in the afternoon as what all photographers describe it around 05:30 where in the sun set is about to seize the dark from the night.

Lighting

Lighting is all-important in controlling the image. It is the illumination of scenes to be photographed and in this photo, I have used the natural light since it is a daytime and a challenge is to maximize the available resources that I have with me at that time.

Equipment

This was shot in a Canon 500D with an 18 – 250mm F3.5 Lens. I took a shot without using any stabilizer or a tripod as I am avoiding to distract my main subject in what he is doing at that moment.

Inspiration

I like simple compositions, that at first glance look ordinary, but with a deeper look there is one or two details that make a statement. In this photo, what I wanted to present the life of an ordinary man living nearby who is working patiently to ensure that his fishing net is ready for his next journey over the sea. It inspires me to showcase what was actually happening in that place unnoticeably if you did not pay attention in it.

Editing

As a beginner aspiring photographer, I have no deep knowledge in post process or image manipulation. But, as far as I remember, I did use adobe light room in this photo to adjust a little bit of exposure, color contrast and add a vignette to direct the eye of viewer in to the main subject and that is the only way that I know in editing at that time.

In my camera bag

I am a minimalist guy who always wanted to carry less thing along with me. As a photographer, it is quite hard to reduce the equipment that I really wanted to put in my back whenever I have a shoot into somewhere else. However, If I'm going outside the house and have no Photography schedule, I always carrying a camera with me in case I saw something interest me to shoot at. Most of the gear that I'm carrying with me is my Canon 80D body, with 50mm F1.8 lens or an 18-135mm kit lens attached with my gorilla pod and a small rode video microphone just in case I wanted to take a video or record an ambient sound.

Feedback

I remember when I am starting in photography, whenever I'm taking a photo, I was so happy and excited to post the pictures I have taken. But whenever I saw same photos which has been taken by my friend with his equipment, I feel so bad and intimidated that holds me back not to show or post whatever I have taken. It is not because I did not took a good shot but it is because I am comparing what I have taken with those who have an expensive gear or with those who have more than experience photographer than me. And as time goes by, along the process, I realized that it is not about the gear or equipment and the experience that you have will satisfy your self or your audience. But it is the story that you are telling in the photo that you have taken no matter what equipment you have. It is just a matter of creativity, maximizing the available resources that you have to portrait or produce something that you really wanted to. And it is all about the artistic within you that you are showing to the viewer of your photo. So my advice to all of you who wanted to capture the same or whatever you wanted capture is, go, get your camera and shoot! Keep on shooting. Maybe in your own eyes, it is ridiculous but the eye of others it looks amazing. The same with this photo that I have taken during my beginning stage in photography. Happy shooting folks!
