Behind The Lens

Location

Being a self-taught photographer, it took some time to build the courage and self confidence to try my hand at pet portraits. Roxy is a female rottweiler owned by a retired police officer. This photo was taken at his home with a inner-wall as background.

Time

Time of day? About midday and in-house.

Lighting

I wanted the photo appear as natural as possible. Therefore artificial lighting is non-existent. Only a bit of window light from the left side.

Equipment

I used my Canon 1200D with the standard 100mm macro lens. My setting were manual, f2.8 and 1/180sec. With ISO on auto the ISO speed was ISO-1600.

Inspiration

I was looking for an opportunity to obtain a best possible pet portrait to include in my portfolio. I also want to explore the ability of the macro lens producing the ideal depth of field I was looking for.

Editing

Apart from a bit of cropping and adjusting contrast and sharpness no other processing was done.

In my camera bag

I prefer to go out with only one lens or maybe two. One will obviously the macro. Then it would be the 50mm F1.8 or either one of the two kit zoom lenses.

Feedback

My advice to any beginner is to get to know your equipment thoroughly. Experiment as much as possible until you gain enough experience to include pet portraits in your portfolio. You can't ask pets to pose. Be prepare to have a lot of bobo's. You will end up with some that you are proud of.
