Behind The Lens

Location

I took this candid picture while we were on holiday, on an Ostrich farm called "Safari" outside Oudtshoorn, Western Cape province, South Africa.

Time

We were on a guided tour through the farm between 14:00 and 15:00 in the afternoon. The sun was high on a clear day.

Lighting

No special lighting was used. It was a clear cloudless day with the sun still high. The only thing I had to contend with was some shade from a few large trees on the fence of the enclosure where I took the picture.

Equipment

This photo was shot in*.jpg mode freehand with a SONY DSLR-A100 Camera, Aperture: 56/10, ISO: 125, Shutter Speed: 1/100 and Focal Length: 550/10.

Inspiration

Ostriches are inquisitive birds and get spoilt by tourists in a number of very funny ways. They also love shiny objects and if you are not careful they will pick your buttons off your jacket or shirt quickly and before you know what is happening. I am sure this bird was eyeing my shiny lens and she came close enough for me to get this picture.

Editing

The picture was taken way back in April 2009. I was and still is a hobbyist and my camera was in *.jpg mode. Not having a raw image I could not do any post-processing or editing to this picture.

In my camera bag

I carried my trusted Sony A100 DSLR camera in my backpack on that family holiday. I had the 18-70mm Sony lens with f3.6-5.6 mounted on my camera and the 75-300mm zoom lens with f4.5-5.6 in my backpack. I found the lens clarity and the quality of the images to meet my needs and capture those special holiday moment perfectly.

Feedback

Although these birds seem tame and fenced in they can still give you a bad bite and can also give a severe kick to your body with a foot that will easily cut you open. Always take a lot of care around them. But they can be candid and funny and will always give you nice pictures.
