Behind The Lens

Location

Any day I get to spend with family is a perfect day and this moment was one of those precious moments I am always looking to capture. Little 2 year old Kipton was enjoying a piggy back ride from his dad Dallas down by the lake in Sylvan Lake, Alberta Canada. He is a busy little man full of energy, giggles and smiles and I captured this image when he was all of those things.

Time

I arranged to meet my nephew and his family down by the lake around 10:00AM on the weekend in September. The wind was blustery and a little cool but we were having fun taking pictures. I love to capture moments that let the personality of my subjects shine and this moment definitely capture both of their personalities.

Lighting

I was using natural light for this photo shoot with my husband using a reflector to bounce light where I needed it. The blustery weather provided some nice soft cloud covered light that suited the mood of being down by the lighthouse at the lake.

Equipment

I shot this image using my Canon 5D Mark lll handheld, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 with a silver reflector bouncing light where I required a boost of light.

Inspiration

Family is what inspired this photo. My family brings me so much joy and when my nephews ask me to photograph them and their families I am in my happy place. I love to capture moments in time that their families will be able to treasure in the years to come. I strongly believe in capturing these moments for the little ones especially because they won't remember all these precious moments they have had with their parents, siblings and grandparents but these images will be proof of the love they were raised with. My hope is they will always treasure the images I create for them.

Editing

There was not much required for post processing in this image. Curves in Photoshop to pull up some shadows is pretty much all that was required after camera raw.

In my camera bag

Well the most important thing in my bag according to the little people I photograph is the Smarties (candy coated chocolate treats). Besides their chocolate treats I have 2 camera bodies with me at all times. I put my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L ll USM on the Canon 5D Mark lll and my Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM on my Canon 6D for this photo shoot. The Canon 600EX-RT speedlite is packed in there as well. It is always necessary to carry extra batteries, extra camera cards and cleaning tools for my lenses. Various polarizing filters for various lenses always stay in my bag so they are always there when I need them. I have numerous other lenses for landscape, macro and wildlife photography as well but only pack them in the bag when required.

Feedback

I think the best advice I have to offer when shooting people is to really be aware of the personalities of your subjects. Be patient with your subjects especially when those subjects are children. Kids don't naturally like to be forced into a pose so I like to engage with them and let them become comfortable with me and my camera and sometimes that means letting them help me take a photograph of their sibling or parent. I have found it helps them to relax and enjoy the process. At the end of a photo shoot with children I always check ahead of time with the parents of course but I have a treat for them in my camera bag so the next time they will be more excited to participate with me.
