Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Upper Waterton Lake in Waterton, Alberta Canada on my birthday. It is a beautiful jewel in Alberta's crown of national parks.

Time

This was a perfect day in Waterton National Park. My husband and I traveled to the park for my birthday and the moment we entered the park we encountered a mama bear and her two cubs munching on berries on the hillside. We spent the entire day wandering around this gorgeous park and in the evening we took a stroll down by the water after supper and captured this shot at 8:21 PM.

Lighting

The sun was beginning to set and a storm clouds began to form causing beautiful shades of oranges, pinks, reds, purples and blues across the sky and reflecting in the water.

Equipment

This was shot using a tripod with a Canon EOD 6D, Canon 16-35mm lens, ISO 100, F22, 3.2 sec manual exposure using a manual white balance.

Inspiration

I am always looking for moments to create beautiful images within my own province and Waterton National Park is a spectacular location to become inspired. The park is filled with magnificent landscapes, wildlife and plant life. I always like to see what I can capture when the sun sets and this day did not disappoint. When I noticed the storm clouds starting to form I knew that we were in for a gorgeous sunset. The light was cascading across the water and bouncing off the clouds, it was a perfect moment to cap off a perfect day.

Editing

I did not do a lot of post processing on this image. I adjusted shadows, contrast and pulled up the hue to bring out what I experienced in the park.

In my camera bag

My bag is chock full of goodies and when I travel I like to take as much as I possibly can because you never know what you will encounter. I always travel with two camera bodies, Canon EOS 6D and Canon Mark III. I prefer having two bodies as you may be concentrating on creating a landscape image and suddenly wildlife appears. One camera is sporting my 16-35mm f2.8 and the other will have either my 70-200mm f4 or my Canon 100-400mm f4.5. I also like to pack my Canon macro 100mm f2.8 as there are so many beautiful little creatures and flowers to capture. The world is so full of beauty and to create what you experience you need a variety of lenses to bring that moment to life. I also carry polarizing filters, plenty of memory cards and spare batteries.

Feedback

When going out into the world to create images I find that being prepared for a variety of situations is always important. Alberta is gorgeous and there are so many images waiting to be created but one has to be very aware of your surroundings as you are the visitor and the wildlife are the residents. Know the dangers before you venture out into the wilderness and be prepared for wildlife, weather or equipment failures. A photographer also has to have patience and tenacity. I can't tell you how many times I have anticipated a spectacular sunset when suddenly a big, angry black cloud parks itself defiantly in front of the sun and blocks those gorgeous rays. I can travel back to a certain spot over and over again before getting that moment I have been waiting for. The most important piece of advice I can give anyone wanting to create photographic images is to shoot a lot. Every time you go out shooting you learn something new and discover something amazing! Experiment with your settings, shift your white balance, play in manual mode to see what you can create. Do be afraid of your equipment.
