Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture in the Bois-de-Coulonge public parc, in Quebec City. It's a patrimonial site and a really nice place 'in town' where you can find nature. As soon as you enter it, there's a variety of flowers, trees, etc. So it didn't take long before I could find some specimens to photograph.

Time

I was a bit lazy that day (it was weekend!). Didn't get up early... So after breakfast, at noon... I decided to pack up some gears and go at the parc just for fun. I took the bus to the parc and I think the photo was took just a few minutes after entering it!

Lighting

For this photo, I was in full sunlight, But doing macro without a flash is hard... I also had the chance to put my new macro flash on the camera. It gave the depth I wanted with the background and the correct exposure on the subject.

Equipment

It was shot with a 7D mkII, Venus Optics Laowa 15mm lens, KX800 Twin Flash. I remember taking the shot handheld! These insects move so quickly, this shot was a bit unexpected...

Inspiration

I was experimenting with new gear I've bought during winter. I was really excited about summer coming and testing on real moving subjects!

Editing

I did basic post process of color correcting. But the biggest change I did was to crop it to get a portrait format. I've lost some of the image but for the good! The rest was some bushes. After that, I also put the picture into Piccure+ to get a bit of sharpen.

In my camera bag

I always bring my macro gear everywhere! Now, I have too much of it so I have a bag dedicated for my macro lenses and flashs. I have now the Canon MP-E 65 5:1 and the Canon MT EX 24 Twin Flash but also 2 lenses from Laowa I really love, the 15mm wide angle macro and the 60 mm 2:1, plus their Twin Flash that looks like bugs antenna!

Feedback

I think you have to be very patient, and you also have to know the gear you use. Don't be shy to experiment a lot inside, outside and on different subject. You will end up knowing what settings to use more quickly. Outside, I was very often completely laying on the ground in strange position just to get a shot! (While my girlfriend was laughing at me...) So don't be afraid to sit on the ground, analyse movements of insects, wait and trigger a lot!
