Location
This photo was taken in Cincinnati, Ohio at Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum. It is a very beautiful place to visit with a park like setting. It is the second largest cemetery in the United States and is recognized as a US National Historic Landmark. The mausoleum behind my model was build in the Gothic Revival style and reminds me of an old world church with flying buttresses.Time
This was taken in the late afternoon. I loved how the natural light gives a great direction of light.Lighting
I knew I wanted to underexpose the background so that it wouldn't distract from my subject. I used exposure combination and spot metering on the subject to get this just right.Equipment
Nikon D4 70-200 2.8 lens at 2.8 ISO 100 Shutter Speed 1/125 no tripod no flashInspiration
With the very regal outfit and crown I was inspired to go for a background that was dramatic. The building is pretty epic and the stones are heavy feeling. It was the perfect background!Editing
Black and white is always a favorite for bringing out the feeling of the image. Laura is wonderful at expressing herself and I just loved capturing her emotion. I do tend to add just a dash of contrast to my images and a little bit of sharpening. In my camera bag
My normal bag includes my Nikon D4 and D3 camera bodies with a 24-70 2.8 lens and a 70-200 2.8 or 105 2.8 lens. I used the black rapid double strap system for most of my weddings and some of my photo-shoots. I hate changing lenses but love the look and variety of different lenses. Also in my backup bag are my 14-24, 10.5 fisheye and 85 and 50 lenses (all Nikon).Feedback
Laura New Meyers is an incredible traveling model. She creates many of her own costumes and is really a performance artist. She inspires me to create unique images. It is so important to have a subject who can take direction well and who is part of the creative process. Having a great location, wonderful light and a great subject can help you focus on the small details just to refine the already great scene. And don't be afraid to get the safe shot and then to play. Who knows, maybe that wacky photo will lead to more creativity in your everyday work. For me it really has helped to have me just create for myself and then that inspires me in my client work too.
