Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken of our beautiful bride Michelle on the afternoon of her wedding. This was just after she finished getting into the dress and I just loved how joyful she was! We were in the tea room area of The Phoenix which is such a neat classic location in Cincinnati. The room is bright pink with stripes and she was worried they were too bright and would be distracting. So we turned off the lights and used the natural window light and made the photo black and white. I love the simplicity of the photo and how the focus is on her stunning face! (A big thanks to Brideface http://www.brideface.com/ for the simple and natural makeup!) http://www.thephx.com/

Nikon D3, 105 mm macro nikon lens at 208, no flash, black rapid double strap

Inspiration

I love all things classic and vintage and so does Michelle! When we first met and chatted about her location (The Phoenix) I knew we would have so much fun together capturing all of the details. She even had a vintage car that her dad rebuilt for their transportation! On the day of the wedding the lace on her dress really brought me back to a classic look. I was inspired to capture her smile with a black and white timeless look.

Editing

I converted this image to black and white in Lightroom to get rid of the distracting pink color of the background. I also added a little bit of contrast.

In my camera bag

My favorite gear includes my two work horse cameras - my Nikon D3 and D4. I have them both on me with my double black rapid straps so I can quickly switch between my favorite two lenses - my Nikon 105 macro for portraits and awesome detail photos and my 24-70 for getting ready in tight spaces. I love the dramatic contrast between the two and the range that they can cover quickly. On a wedding day I like to be prepared so I don't miss any of the great emotions!

Feedback

I am a big believer in getting the photo of the emotion before it disappears. If you try to recreate the moment then the feeling behind it just isn't there. Then if I have time, I like to take a step back and see how I can make the composition more creative. Often changing the angle or zooming in and out with my feet is all that is required. My high school newspaper teacher often told us if the photo isn't dynamic enough to try shooting tight and then move in even tighter. I also like to think about how negative space and what we choose to include (or not include) is so important. It shapes the story that we tell and what is left to remember the celebration after the wedding day is complete.
