Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at an outdoor event to benefit a good friend with kidney disease due to diabetes. I had built the guitar to be auctioned off, and snapped this pic with my phone just before the bidding started.

Time

It was late afternoon with the sun behind some trees. I was also under a shelter which was lucky, because it helped diffused any light that would have reflected off the gloss finish.

Lighting

The sun was low in the sky but diffused by some trees. There were also overhead fluorescents, but they were not very bright. Even so, I believe my phone switched to "low light mode".

Equipment

This was shot with my Samsung Galaxy S5. No flash.

Inspiration

The bidding was about to begin on my latest build and I realized that after 4 months of work, I had to give her up. So I wanted a picture to remember it by and I thought with the given mix of lighting that this low angle would eliminate glare and be a cool perspective. I love all the guitars I build but this one was extra special because I built it to help a friend. So I wanted a shot that would help inspire myself when I look back at it.

Editing

Since this was from my phone, the only post processing I used were a few instagram filters. Boosting the contrast and saturation, not much else really.

In my camera bag

My normal equipment would include my Sony SLT A58 and a Tamron 18-200 lens that I use for pretty much everything. Along with those I keep a Canon powershot SX610 in there just for fun stuff. But in this case, It was just my phone, plain and simple Galaxy S5.

Feedback

Don't ignore the importance of spontaneous shots. Weather you use your go to DSLR or your phone, the rules are the same. No real planning went into this except for getting the low angle because it's a cool perspective. It also eliminated any glares on a glossy finish. I was also trying to include the entire guitar so I tilted the phone, and that added a nice angle.
