Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at Fredrick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They had a Dahlia exhibit where local people can display their variations of Dahlias.

Time

This picture was taken in the afternoon on a Sunday adventure to the Fredrick Meijer Gardens with my mom. My fiancé was having a 'boys weekend' up north with his dad and brothers, so my mom and I decided to take an adventure on our own. If you ever have the chance to go to the Fredrick Meijer Gardens - you really should. It is beautiful with the different landscapes, greenhouses, and Japanese Garden exhibit. There are many different options for everyone in the family to see something that would catch their eye.

Lighting

This picture was taken indoors because that is where they had all of the finalists for the Dahlia contest! In these situations you have to do as much as you can with what is given to you in those conditions. Different angles look better in certain lighting, you need to know your subject and the lighting that will be best for your subject - whether it is a flower, a person, or an animal!

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D3100 with a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. No other equipment was used!

Inspiration

I took this picture because it was my favorite variation of the Dahlias. I decided to take it on the angle because I thought it would have a better representation of the depth and pattern of the petals.

Editing

Yes! I just recently switched over to using Adobe Lightroom. Usually with my post-processing I keep my edits minimal so that the natural beauty can still shine through! Through post-processing I will do color correction, correct lens distortion, and sharpen finer details.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have my Nikon D3100 with my 18-55mm lens. I also have an extra battery, my new external flash, lens hood, and my other lens (55-200mm).

Feedback

I would suggest to try taking pictures at different angles to get a variety of perspectives.
