The stunning Tarawera Falls plummets out of cliffs above this shot. After a long drive down forestry roads, there is a 700m walk to view them, however I took the long walk (3.5kms) and discovered 2 other amazing waterfalls along the way! I think it might be time to invest in some long exposure equipment...

Location
This photo was taken at Tarawera Falls, near Kawerau NZ. I left the main track to get a different angle, and managed to get a new take on the lower part of the falls. I'm relatively new to photography, and am having a blast figuring out new techniques all the time.Time
The photo was taken early afternoon. I went for a hike with friends from the Tarawera Outlet to the Tarawera Falls, about 1.5 hours and just happened to arrive at the falls at the perfect time for lighting.Lighting
As I am self-learning, I'm still figuring these things out. All I know is that the sun was thankfully in the perfect place for this shot when I got there.Equipment
I used my Canon G12, no extra lens or flash.Inspiration
I love water, and photos of waterfalls so was really excited to try my hand at shooting the Tarawera Falls; it's quite a spiritual place. I wanted to get it from a different angle than other photos I have seen, so left the path to get closer and lower. I took a few shots of the whole falls (this image does not show the top, tallest waterfall), but also wanted to capture the whitewater lower down. I haven't shot long exposure before, and don't have the equipment for a really long exposure, so was really happy with how my basic equipment managed to capture the flow of the water.Editing
Yes, just a little. Again, I only have basic editing software, so just added in some definition and sharpness, maxed out the highlights and added a little shadow. I also saturated it a little. In my camera bag
Just my camera and a tripod - still saving up for anything else.Feedback
Next time I travel to this area I'll definitely take a tripod, and I really want to get some long exposure equipment. Last time I slowed the shutter speed as much as possible on the camera, and had to use a rock for a "tripod"!
