Location
This photo was taken in the garden where I lived. Being new to photography, I am also enjoying the post editing process learning photoshop and the use of various apps.Time
This photo was taken most likely in the morning as it is my favourite time of dayLighting
The morning light gives me room to find the light in the subject itselfEquipment
Preferring to be unencumbered by equipment, I chose a handheld point and shoot Canon G12 in 2012 and other than lens cloth and glasses, I keep it pretty simple and rely on the joy of the shot or post-editing to recreate the photo.Inspiration
I love the Dahlia's massive appeal and depth of petals. It is a great subject in late summer when most gardens pale with the end of the flower season, there is the Dahlia giving itself up in a big way. It just shouts; "Look at me!"Editing
I post edit in photoshop and am self-taught over a decade now. Photoshop is my favourite for BW. In this photo there are a lot of layers that have helped bring the focused centre out to a soft zoom blur background. I wanted to redefine the photo in a simpler form to show it's burst of petals and the seemingly endless bigness of the flower. In my camera bag
I keep it simple with just the camera, Finepix X100 w/ custom settings, cleaners, rain cover and 2 pairs of eyeglasses. I do have tripods and other cameras and lenses but in hindsight have discovered that I don't like to hike encumbered and prefer the natural surroundings as my tripod when accessible for the photo. Eventually I will get another camera as the creative market for point and shoots and mirror less cameras is amazing.Feedback
Have fun, experiment, walk a lot w/ your camera and see not only what attracts you but what you want to do and where you want to go w/ photography. Then pursue that. For me, post editing was important because, as an artist in other mediums, I wanted to play with the photo, refer to it with painting or in my landscape gardening see relationships, colours, patterns, texture, light and shade. So learning Photoshop and other apps was important. Keeping it simple gave me the delight of small achievements each day while encouraging the pursuit in consolidating bigger creative projects.
