Behind The Lens

Location

Oshkosh WI during Airventure 2016

Time

Mid afternoon

Lighting

It was a scattered cloud kind of day, the skies opened up after early day showers to present a great backdrop.

Equipment

Nikon D750 camera with the Tamron 600mm telephoto lens.

Inspiration

It is a gorgeous aircraft and the only Mars left flying. Caught it just right when they began the drop, and what you see is the result of a deep passion for aviation.

Editing

I cycled this shot through photoshop as a raw file. This was one of my first attempts. Really all I did was to increase the exposure a bit because the shadows caused some under exposure.

In my camera bag

Being newer to the hobby usually I have the telephoto depending on the event, and lately I've stuck to the tried and true 50mm Nikon f1.8 lens. Beyond that not much else.

Feedback

Some people prefer to shoot aircraft in burst or continuous. Personally I prefer the control and shoot only single shot. That said aim a bit forward as in some cases the aircraft are moving quite fast. Personally I am still working on handling a large lens, so my limit for shutter speed is either 240 or 320 as anything more freezes the props. Shoot raw so you take advantage of large quality files to edit. This blew up to a 16x20 print very nicely. With air shows its like prospecting for gold. In a pan of many shots do not be discouraged if there's only a few keepers. The more you shoot the more gold in the pan.
