It is a photo of my grandmother’s hands and was taken at my home. I share a special bond with her and which is the reason this photo is close to my heart. She is a very strong woman and has had many amazing experiences in her life. I have listened to all her stories and there is a feeling which is evident in her stories. The happy glow which is there in her eyes when she is telling her stories, the joy can be felt by the listener as well. She has lived her life to the optimum. Her eyes, her body, her voice resonate a common voice, "I have done enough." Three fingers on my grandmother’s right hand are frozen i.e. she can’t straighten them, she uses her first finger and thumb is get her chores done. This certainly says that she has done a lot and is still doing her bit at the age of eighty-six.Time
It was taken in the evening. Just after having the evening tea, I requested my grandmother if I could shoot a couple of photos of her hands.Lighting
I had planned to capture the wrinkles of her hands acutely and therefore, I had switched on all the lights of the room. I requested her to keep her hands in a few positions that I thought would look good but the technique failed to tell the beauty of her hands accurately. So, I requested her to sit comfortably and keep her hands as she normally would. That's the beauty of the picture as it is in it's natural form.Equipment
I had used my phone, Samsung Galaxy Grand GT-I9082 and as I wanted to shoot the background dark I used the flash.Inspiration
A touch through hands conveys feelings, and it is in it’s purest form. Feelings of love, care and affection are felt when a mother caresses her child. A pat on the back by the mentor makes the student feel all the support and encouragement he needs in the world. Personally for me, my most serene feeling till today, has been to lay down in the lap and get my hair brushed by a hand bearing feelings of love, care and affection. Since young, I have been curious about the hands and the magic they have. During my years in law school I learnt Palmistry, just to know more about the hands. I had read an article on how hands and gestures portray emotions, this led me to thinking that I want to capture emotion through hands. I was thinking about the kind of shot I wanted to capture but couldn’t decide. After pondering upon it for quite a while, I finally decided to capture my grandmother's hands.Editing
In order to highlight the intensity of the emotion in the photo, I have kept it in monochrome and I have also increased the sharpness to make the wrinkles on the hands clearer.In my camera bag
I think the best camera is the one you carry all the time; for me it’s my phone. I believe that heavy photography equipment does not guarantee good photos, but it's your ability that does. I am a lawyer by profession and don’t usually carry a big camera with me everyday. I believe in capturing whenever I feel or see something worth, even if, all I have is my phone.Feedback
There are no set rules to shoot hands portraying emotions, for there are a thousand different ways to hold your woman’s hand that conveys love, care and protection. The important thing with these kind of shots is that, as a photographer, in order to capture the emotion, it is imperative for one to feel the emotion while shooting. When this emotion is portrayed by the photo shot, it makes it iconic, which makes all the difference.
