Behind The Lens

Location

Out for a walk in the evening sunlight. I saw this Robber Fly land up in a tree. The lighting was perfect.

Time

About 8:00PM CDT in July.

Lighting

Just natural light from the setting sun.

Equipment

Nikon CoolPix P-610. Program auto, zoom at maximum for the focal distance.

Inspiration

I love photographing insects.

Editing

I use Photo Gallery for all my post processing, just not smart enough to the use Lightroom etc. This photo was cropped, darkened a bit, contrast increased, shadows increased, and highlights decreased.

In my camera bag

Canon Rebel XS, standard kit 18-55mm lens, Raynox macro attachment, Tamron 90mm macro, Sigma 75-300mm with macro, and the previously mentioned Nikon P-610. I'd really like to have some faster lenses, but I also like to eat and have money for gas. :)

Feedback

Keep your eyes open, look for the little things, take advantage of early morning and late evening light. Trust your equipment. Even if the auto features misread light a bit, it is easy to correct it with Photo Gallery. While most folks recommend completely manual settings, I waste to much time trying to find the right settings when I'm in manual. By the time I do, the subject is usually gone.
