Behind The Lens

Location

My mother has always loved cemeteries and she passed that love on to me. I find them rather peaceful and often go there when I need some quite time to think. I took this shot in one of those moments at a cemetery near my apartment in Salt Lake City.

Time

I remember that it was the first day of spring and the first warm day we had had in a while. Mid afternoon I decided to take a walk through the cemetery with my camera bag and see what fun shots I could find.

Lighting

It was mid afternoon and sunny, which I loved because it added to the high contrast in this shot.

Equipment

This was shot with Cannon Rebel T6i, I was experimenting with some manual lenses I had gotten off an old film camera and for this particular shot I was using a 28-90 mm macro lens.

Inspiration

I take my camera with me everywhere I go because I never know when I will find something that catches my eye. After taking a nap in the cemetery I just started walking around and waiting for something to stand out. The bright, complementary colors of this pipe did just that.

In my camera bag

I love taking candid portraits so I make sure to always have my camera ready with a Cannon EFS 18-135 mm zoom lens, it is a basic lens that allows me to catch small moments when I have to act fast. I have also fallen in love with a SMC Pentax-M 1.7 500mm manual lens. It is tinny so it travels well and is convenient for hiking. I usually carry some magnifying lens attachments with that which can help create some wonderful macro shots.

Feedback

My main advice for anyone trying to capture a photo is to take your camera everywhere, you never know when something may catch your eye. Specifically for this shot though, if you want to capture something similar I would suggest experimenting with wide apertures. Focal length can make or break a shot and for shots like this the shorter the focal length the better.
