Location
This photo was taken in the Northern Argentine Andes. At 14,000 ft elevation where it is difficult to breath, it felt like we were on top of the world! and we really were!!!Time
The local bus left early in the morning. It was still dark out. A few of hours into it, and after many peaks and valleys, villages and streams, we arrived at the very top of the mountain range. The sun barely rising, the moist chill in the air keeping the clouds low between the magnificently rugged folds of the earth.Lighting
As a trained visual artist/graphic designer, and a lifelong photographer, I am attracted to composition and, of course, contrast in lighting. My intention here was to draw the viewer to the vastness of this glorious scene. The clouds below acting like a ceiling we stand atop of. The early morning sun, shining above the moisture, illuminating the foreground earth layers in the right spots and at the right time for this photographer to capture.Equipment
When I travel internationally, I carry a small, pocket-size digital camera. I like it because it is easy to hide in any pocket where it can conveniently be reached, and… nobody wants to steal it! This time, I had a small compact Cannon Power Shot.Inspiration
Feeling insignificant and humble, I was quite taken by the scenery in front of me. The infinite space of a vague horizon, the low hanging clouds, the elegant folds of the earth, the sunlight breaking above the clouds... and the heavenly feeling that everything seemed to be at one's arm reach!Editing
When I get home from a trip, I bring my images to my computer editing programs and yes, I edit. In this case I increased the contrast a bit, perhaps a bit of saturation and definition but not much more. I didn't want to loose the ethereal qualities of the wispy clouds and the textures an colors of the foreground lines and shapes. In my camera bag
For many many years I carried a Nikon F with several lenses....heavy and bulky. Now, when I travel, I carry the compact digital camera of the hour. It seems I am always getting yet another one! They don't last forever. They tend to fall out of my hand or out of my pocket; they get wet; they sit in the sun on the outdoor café table; they roll down the side of the ancient ruin; they get left behind in the hotel room. These small and lightweight cameras travel far and wide with me. And I like them!Feedback
Be there! put yourself in a beautiful spot in the world that touches your soul. Trust and love whatever equipment you carry. It is what you do with a camera that matters! Observe, admire, be patient and wait for the right moment. Plan your shot and, when the light and the composition please you, shoot! It is all an experiment. Life is an adventure! Enjoy!
