Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the Thames Path, which is a public pathway running along the south side of the river Thames in London.

Time

It had been such a lovely summer's day that I thought I'd take my camera gear and cycle into the city after work. I wanted to capture the evening sun in the heart of the London. I found the location for this shot purely by chance, I had cycled for several miles along the river path trying to find a spot away from the crowds of tourists, this was the only place I found with no-one else around. I guess it was one of those out of the way views not many people know about. I also arrived here just in time to get the sun dipping below the horizon at around 7pm purely by chance.

Lighting

I knew I had good light as the sun was going down creating a warm glow in the skyline, reflecting off the buildings and clouds. I wanted to use a long exposure to smooth out the water and add atmosphere to the shot, I also used a small aperture to bring out the sun's rays. I had to time the exposure between boats sailing along the river, which is suprisingly busy.

Equipment

I used a Sony A7 Mk2, Manfrotto BeFree Carbon fiber Tripod, cable release, Lee ND filters and ND Grad.

Inspiration

I love to take photos of iconic places in London and I'm always looking out for different view points. This shot of the Tower Bridge and the Shard reflect the rapidly changing skyline across London. This view in particualr has changed in the past two years.

Editing

I used a combination of Lightroom and Photoshop to create this image. Using filters allow me to get the exposure correct in camera and gives me more latitude to bring out details in post. I needed to do a lot of Photoshop processing to remove a lense flare, which was always going to happen when shooting into the sun.

In my camera bag

If I'm travelling light and cycling around the city I manage to cram a suprising amount of gear into my cycle pannier - a Sony A7 Mk2 with a 24-240 lense, a BeFree Manfrotto tripod, a set of Lee filters and a cable release. Plus extra batteries and cards.

Feedback

Always arrive with plenty of time to setup at your chosen location, especially if you want to capture the sun just setting behind a building. Use a small aperture to create the sun rays.
