This photo was taken in a garden in a little park in Lewistown, MT.Time
Early afternoon on a warm August day.Lighting
Honestly, I had never tried an up close shot of flowers so I really had no idea how to use the lighting to my advantage. I just found this flower to be pretty and wanted to keep a memory of it.Equipment
Canon Rebel T4i with a Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.Inspiration
Up until this point I had never really explored photography outside the realm of sports photography. My son had played baseball pretty much his whole life and I really wanted to capture those memories. I began writing for a local paper in my town covering about six high school's sports programs. It was then that I realized I had a knack for sports photography. Typically a paper would send a photographer out with the reporter but I actually never needed a photographer and ended up doing all my own sports photos. This photo in particular is my first leap out of the sports world. Don't get me wrong, I love the thrill of capturing the perfect strike or head first slide into home, but I really wanted to capture something pretty. I saw a garden in one of the parks my son's team was having lunch and just gave it a go. I didn't understand lighting or even how to fully use my camera; I just looked for "pretty."Editing
As I am not formally educated in photography and all that it entails, the post-processing scares the heck out me. I don't know how to use Photoshop outside of cropping and maybe a tweak in contrast or color so no, what you see is pretty much what it is.In my camera bag
Because I am new to photography, I haven't really upgraded my equipment other than pick up a longer ranged lens for capturing my kid on the diamond. I carry my little Canon Rebel T4i, my cheap little go to everyday 135mm kit lens and a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS.Feedback
I think, from what I have learned so far, and trust me, I don't feel I am really in the position to give advice, but I have learned to just find the things make me happy and then just try different ways to capture the moment. What makes me happy generally shows in my photos and with that, I hope others find happy as well. Thank you.
