Location
My daughter spent the summer studying abroad in Spain so at the end of her time I went to visit her in Madrid. She had become an expert on what to see and do there and one of the things she insisted on was going to visit this Temple of Debod right at sunset. She is also a hobbyist photographer and had heard it was a great opportunity for pictures.Time
We went just before sunset and were awed immediately by the beauty of the temple. But we stayed for several hours because the light and the pictures just kept getting better and better as the sun set and the moon came out.Lighting
I must have taken a couple hundred pictures that evening, but I like this one best because the light of the sunset had softened to where the lights on the temple itself started to provide an inner glow, while simultaneously the moon came out and reflected in the perfectly still water as yet another source of light.Equipment
Canon 50d - no special equipmentInspiration
We just saw this temple at exactly the right time of evening on just the right day - when there was no breeze so that the water was perfectly still, and the crescent moon was in just the right spot.... just all of the elements came together.Editing
Just cropped it a bit to show exactly what I was looking at with my eye.In my camera bag
I have just this month upgraded from my old Canon 50d to a Canon 5D MKIII so that is now my constant companion - with the new lens that I got with it (24-105mm) and one telephoto lens. I also carry a mini tripod but didn't use it for this shot.Feedback
Find out from locals or from past visitors what are the unique spots for pictures when visiting somewhere. If it weren't for my daughter's hearing about this, I probably would not have chosen to go see a "temple from Egypt" when visiting Madrid, Spain. And even if I had I wouldn't have known how important it was to be there right after the sun set. It was beautiful for pictures when we got there, but just got better and better as the light changed. So patience was important.
