Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken close to my hometown overlooking Buncrana, which is on the Inishowen peninsula Co Donegal, Ireland, a part of the country in which we are spoilt for for a choice of dramatic scenery from views of the Atlantic ocean to the Northern Lights over Malin Head, but sometimes the simplest photograph nearby surprises you.

Time

This was taken late in the evening the sun had not quite set, as can be seen behind the cow, it was one of those sunsets that did not look like it would good, bit then it turned orange for a brief period at the that point there was not much to shoot other than the orange ball in the sky, then all of a sudden the cows started to move on up the hill as if on cue.

Lighting

I always find the sunsets a challenge,as i said it would have been just another sunset but for the cows moving up the hill and then the cow was silhouetted against the sun.

Equipment

This was shot on the Canon 1D mark 3, an old camera now but still my work horse until I can get hold of the 5D mk 4, I was frantically changing lenses to see which was working best, I settled on one of my favourite lenses the 70-200mm f4.

Inspiration

My daughter is my main inspiration she keeps me on my toes especially when I'm doing the Project 366 challenge, she scans the horizon for any potential sunsets, like this one so off we set in the car.

Editing

Mostly I just adobe raw to process the photo I try to capture the photograph as best I can, but this doesn't always work out, this one need very little, I cropped some of the photo on the left to give the cow something to walk into.

In my camera bag

Canon 1D mark 3, 50mm f1.4, 24-105 f4, 70-200 f4 a 580 ex 2 flash.

Feedback

My advice as it's digital keep on snapping get out of the full auto I use mostly av but experiment often and join a camera club to share knowledge with other like minded photographers.
