Location
I took this picture on the summit of Kanzelwand in the Allgäu Mountain range in Austria.Time
We wanted to beat the crowds and enjoy the hike without to many crowds so we arrived to the base of the mountian shortly after the lifts opened. After a short trip to the top I split off from the group I was with to hike to the summit of the mountian, the rest had planned on hiking over to another summit. I arrived around mid-morning and managed to capture one of my favorite shots from the trip.Lighting
The lighting was a challenge to get a decent exposure. There was a 90% chance of storms that day. We lucked out and only got a misting but a group of us hiking in ankther spot got poured on. The spotty light and the darkened clouds really helped me capture a fitting atmosphere for the photo and added a bit of mood. Took a few try to get the exposure just right but I am happy with the way it turned out.Equipment
For this shot I used my Nikon D7200 with a AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G prime lens. I had packed light and didn't have any other gear with me other than my 18-140mm kit lens.Inspiration
I just got into photography and had only owned my camera for a month at this time. Alot of my photos at this time were impromptu as I was still getting used to the setting and features on my camera. After a bunch of different photos I was going to start heading back to join up with my group again. On the way down I spotted some rock climbers resting on top of a large rock. My first intention was to take a photo of just the climbers but after my first photo I realized the potential of the shot. After a few more trys with different exposures and moving around a bit I ended up with this photo and am still very pleased with how it turned out. I'm also very grateful at the reception it seems to keep getting even a couple months after. Means alot to have a photo everyone seems to enjoy.Editing
Alot of my photos I dont usually use any post editing and if I do it's mainly just to brighten the photo or to pull out a bit of color. For this photo I decided to try out editing again, which I haven't done since a graphic design class in grade 9. It turned out not bad for not really knowing what I was doing but I am thinking I'll give it another shot now that I've been learning and practicing with post processing programs for a couple months now.In my camera bag
I keep my bag pretty simple right now since I'm just starting out. Currently though I have my DSLR with the kit lens and a 35mm Prime. On top of those I have an extra SD Card, Extra Battery, couple of cleaning cloths and my GoPro. Just recently I bought a a remote shutter along with a couple ND filters to try and expand my knowledge and try some new types of photographs. My mom also has a tripod she let's me use to take some long exposure photos instead of balancing my camera on a ledge or my knee.Feedback
I definitely recommend the Allgäu Mountain range that spans from Germany into Austria. It was a fantastic trip. Oberstdorf Germany is a beautiful ski town surrounded by mountains on all sides but the entrance. They have a fantastic system using passes to use the lifts and busses in the area. One of the tips I follow most is to always take a few photos with different exposures because more often than not the one I like the most on my camera is my least favorite when I view it on my computer. Usually you only get one chance to take the photo and the more photos you have to pick from the smaller the chance you don't have one you can use.
