I took this photo on one of my "comfort place" here in Auckland, specifically at Magazine Bay Wharf during a winter morning. It was a bit freezing that time but I managed to get out of bed for the shoot.Time
This photo was taken on 18th of June 2016 on a cloudy morning. When I turned up on site I was not expecting anything that will come out of it because the clouds are too thick for light to peek through. When I was about to pack my gear up I started to see light peeking through the thick clouds so I have stayed back for a while, and gladly I did.Lighting
I wanted to draw the viewers attention to the subtle light that is peeking through the thick clouds the are slowly breaking apart creating a dramatic effect on the scene.Equipment
Shot with my Nikon D7200 and Tokina 11-20 with Hitech Formatt 0.9GND. I did not need any other Neutral Density Filter because the scene is a bit dark anyway.Inspiration
I have been going back to this place for quite some time because every visit the nature paints different scene. I have not captured yet the scene that I am trying to envisage for an epic sunrise that what's keep me going back to this place.Editing
I processed this shot with Photoshop. I have used luminosity mask and Nik Color Effect to bring out the contrast. I pumped up the vibrancy of yellow/orange colour as well to make it a bit stand out due to the scene being mostly blue in colour. I did sharpen it with Nik Sharpen Tool.In my camera bag
The time that I shot this photo I got with me my Nikon D7200 with sets of Hitech Formatt NDs and GNDs. I also have some Lee Filters. Recently I was able to buy the Nikon D750 and this will be my primary camera from now on, I will be using my D7200 for time lapse photography. My lenses are Nikon 16-35, 18-200, 50mm and Tokina 11-20mm. I always carry my Manfrotto 190 Go tripod because I will always shoot long exposure. My smartphone has tons of apps for photography such as TPE, Photopills, ND Timer, qDSLRdasboard just to name a few.Feedback
Careful planning is really important mostly in every shoot. When you decided to go for a shoot, turn up even if the weather doesn't seem to look good at all. Don't forget to savour the moment as you shoot. Most importantly learn to wait, you never know what the light holds for you.
